Earth Day

As the Sidney Club's contribution to Earth Day, five of our members joined several people from the Friends of North Saanich Parks to attack and remove blackberry canes, daphne plants and holly and ivy sprigs from a rugged area of Denham Till Park in North Saanich. The weather cooperated and we didn't get wet, although most of us are now sporting souvenirs from uncooperative blackberry prickles. We did make a significant dent in the invasive species squeezing out native plants in this great natural setting.

Victoria Hand Project - Donation

UPDATE April 13, 2023

Our club presented the Victoria Hand Project with a cheque for $5,000 to assist them with their Ukraine Project.  Pictured below (from L-R) are club member, Kenny Podmore, Michael Peirone and Kim Arklie (from the Victoria Hand Project) and club president, Jim Parker.

Victoria Hand Project (VHP) is a charity organization with a mission to help amputees in-need receive prosthetic arms, worldwide. VHP empowers prosthetic care professionals in under-resourced economies and healthcare systems to create and provide VHP’s prosthetic arms in their own communities. VHP provides equipment, training, and support, laying the groundwork for local, sustainable, on-going care. Receiving a Victoria Hand is transformative: functional prosthetic arms are an incredible tool to help amputees regain independence, hope, and opportunities to live more fulfilling and happier lives. The impact goes far beyond the recipient, with positive effects rippling through families, caretakers, and increased clinic capacity.  Thank you very much for such a great presentation VHP!

Guest Speaker - Dr. Ed Ishiguro

Dr Ed Ishiguro gave a most interesting presentation on the recent research into the processes involved in how aging affects cells. Increasing age is a factor in some diseases, but not all. As we age our immune system slows down and becomes more inefficient at removing aging cells and the damaging chemicals which they release. One of the byproducts of normal metabolic conversion to create energy by cells are chemicals called free radicals, elements with a loose electron which latch onto other cells quite easily and cause damage. He is not a fan of oral antioxidants, saying research studies are still inconclusive. Several chemical compounds are being experimentally trialed to aid in the removal of free radicals from one’s body. The current one which is available to diabetes patients is metformin. Cell senescence can be slowed, but not stopped completely, by active physical and mental exercise. Dr Ishiguro is from the U-Vic Speakers Bureau and is one of our club's favourite presenters.

Katie Coard was introduced by President Jack G with the request that her talk pull him into the 21 century for Website design.  Katie described web sites for their benefits – Treat them as A modern day business card that interested people can introduce themselves to Sidney Rotary with.  If we are advertising ourselves they are a link to more information
They are :
  1. primary communication and recruiting  tool
  2. integral part of club operations
  3. Public image resource
Katie showed us some examples of RC of Tucson before and after website retooling.  Discussed  home pages  on sites need to be interactive- showing members  having fun, with a  message of  who we are , mission statement (what) , where  we meet,  and how to  get a hold of us.  Showed   Sidney RC club runner web site--- is well positioned on Google, however, our site is full of links (some of which do not work) and is lacking in imagery. Web searchers   struggle to find out what is Rotary.   Need to refine a section to describe the club. Keep only up to date info i.e. schedule of events.  Contact sheet needs to be more accessible- Not clear how to join the club.  Katie feels that need to reduce non essential information on the homepage move to the member section – i.e.  meeting minutes . Website hits can be tracked using an analytical add on.  Katie then showed the District web site and  Saanich  Rotary Clubs  new sites . Pres Jack G thanked the speaker and a flower bouquet from Jack M’s garden was given as a thank you.

Motion made to have Katie spend 4 hours @$35/hour to revamp Sidney RC website---carried.

Engaging the Next Generation in Rotary
Rotary worldwide is challenged for new members.
The new generation of “millennials” could be the solution.
Consider Millennials are:
Globally minded, their world is small and instant!
* need a vehicle to make a huge impact
* are socially engaged, involved in their community
*ambitious, in a rush with a sense of urgency
* seek networking and mentoring opportunities
*want unique and powerful ways to connect

If they’re so ideally placed why aren’t they joining?
*they don’t know who we are, how do we change that?
*they don’t know that they are welcome, who have you invited?
*do they have the time? Demands on their time are enormous.

Answer why should you make Rotary a priority?
The Challenges
  1. Can be unreliable...careers, social life and don’t know what they’ll be doing next week
Their world is a mosaic of rapid change, no linear plan
  1. Resilience... Older generations think life is supposed to be hard and build character
Millennial think life is fair, fun and fast!
  1. High maintenance: need to be validated,
Complimented, thanked, congratulated and confirmed daily.
They’ll give 100% and need to be praised.

SERGEANT AT ARMS: Cosmo asked for happy and sad Dollars and several members gave a happy dollar, Jack McAuley gave sad Dollar for a car accident he was involved in.

Gig Harbor Rotary and 120 other Rotary Clubs and Districts throughout the United States, Canada, and the Cayman Islands is in a Global Grant to support the work of the Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP).  The GLP founded in 1997 is the largest grassroots, multi-club, multi-district project in Rotary.
Our club agreed to support the project, one thousand dollars was suggested by our President as the clubs donation to the GLP project for this year. The participating members voted in favour of the proposal.  The proposal will be submitted to the board for approval at our upcoming   Business meeting on the 13 Oct 2016

PROGRAM :  Changes to the BC Societies act and how it will impact our club
Anne   Moskow  laid out before the club the dilemma now impending.  The rotary Club of Sidney is currently operating under 2 sets of constitutions and numerous  by laws  (A) The RI   and  (B)     BC Societies act and they have now ran afoul of each other and there is no way of reconciling both. The Societies Act new legislation passed in the spring of 2015 will come into effect on November 28, 2016. This will cause our club to be inoperable at that point in time if left its current format.  Ann pointed out various approaches to navigate around these complexities presently confronting the club.

Sukhi gave a presentation on fundraising for the organization. The Victoria chapter raises $800,000 to $900,000 annually.  50% of funds raised are sent to the National office to support research, and 50% stays in the region for local programs and services.  Funds are primarily raised by the Cowichan Valley Grape Escape Bike Tour ($400,000 last year), the MS Walk ($150,000 last year), and the Carnation Drive and BBQ that are part of MS Awareness month in May of each year.  Details of these events are on their website.

Sukhi thanked Members for the continued support our Club has provided by hosting a carnation booth each year during the Carnation Drive.  She also asked us to consider other fund development support ideas.  She suggested our Club could consider supporting their efforts to set up and/or fund Yoga Classes in Sidney for MS victims.

  3. Letter from Terry Toone advising of the opportunity to recognize Rotarians for their significant efforts to eradicate Polio.  Nomination forms have been received.
Program - Business Meeting
Alix Hotsenpiller spoke of Rock Solid, a bullying prevention program aimed at elementary schools.  It is part of/in conjunction with the WITS program (Walk away, Ignore, Talk it Out, Seek Help).  Alix has been with Rock Solid for 4 years.  Rock Solid began in response to incidents in the community, particularly, the Rena Virk tragedy.  Subsequently, Uvic conducted a study of the WITS program and found it to statistically result in a decrease in bullying.  The program has grown from Esquimalt to across Canada.  Alix said that labeling someone a “bully” is generally not helpful; this situation often has a more complicated dynamic.  Alix said bullying can go onto to affect development into adult life.  Rock Solid has a website on which training information is available.  They also will provide their programming into schools at a cost of appx. $500 per school, per year.  In schools, the program is more focused on prevention rather than incident response and there is an emphasis on seeking help.

WITS Program - Potential for Success

Posted on Sep 29, 2015
Our presenter this evening was Alix Hotsenpiller from the WITS program (which is part of the Rock Solid Foundation).  Alix presented our members with a very informative outline of the WITS program which is carried out in schools across Canada.  WITS stands for:  W - Walk away, I - Ignore, T - Talk it out and S - Seek Help.  The WITS program is Canada's only evidence based, open access, bullying prevention program that targets reductions in peer victimization and bullying directly in elementary schools.  Pictured below is Alix being thanked by President Cosmo with a certificate of appreciation that 10 polio vaccines will be made in her honour.  Many thanks to Alix !

ANNOUNCEMENTS
1. Cosmo received a thank you note from Natasha Cleverley, thanking the Club for having her is a guest at last week’s meeting.  Natasha is interested in joining our Club, but cannot commit for the next six months.

2. Cosmo also received an email from Dan Mercer, advising us that the Car Raffle raised $118,000, and inviting Club members to a “Thank-You meal” on August 27th.  Dan needs to know by August 21st if anyone is interested in attending.  Cosmo will contact Dan to find out the location for this event, better enabling Club members to determine their interest in attending.

3. Maria described her current strategies to increase membership, in her role as Marketing Director.  Maria has three main strategies at present.
(1) BRING IN GUESTS WHO ENTERED THE CANADA DAY DRAW: All members present agreed it was a good strategy to have these individuals attend one of the weekly meetings as a guest.  They would get the “dinner prize” advertised for the draw, and get exposure to the possibilities of membership in the Club.
(2)  CREATE SIGN FOR DISPLAY AT EVENTS:  The sign quote for two 4 x 3 feet signs is $303.98 plus tax.  Members present approved this purchase, with the expense to be paid by proceeds from the fall fair.  The sign will fit the stand already in place for Bingo’s.  Members present also assisted Maria to generate a list of community support initiatives to put on the sign that have been undertaken by the Club in the last few years.
(3)  NEWSPAPER AD:  Maria would like to place an ad in the Peninsula News, and have personal profile stories published in this paper that describe individual Rotary experiences.  The cost per ad is $300, and the request is to place ads on a quarterly basis, making a total of three ads for the year at a total cost of $900; Maria anticipates personal profile stories would be free. In response to the request to approve this money, Members want to wait until the Budget review meeting before making a decision.  In the meantime, suggestions for Maria were to see if there is free advertising available in the community section of this paper.

4. Dan R advised members that it is time to submit annual dues.  Please get your dues payment of $250 in to Dan as soon as possible, as payment is now past due.

5. Cosmo received a funding request from the Rock Solid Foundation, to assist this group in providing local schools with funds to offer an anti-bullying program.  The cost per school to offer this program is $500.  This group will be invited to speak at one of the weekly meetings, to enable the Club to consider this request.

Erin Fraser, from the Sidney detachment of the RCMP, spoke at tonight’s meeting.  The Sidney detachment has 31 officers, offering 24 hour coverage.  This includes a four-person Detective unit, and two-person unit for First Nations policing.  There have been 70 impaired driving convictions this year already.  They also receive daily calls from BC Ferries to address a variety of issues, with mental health-related challenges as a core problem related to many of the calls they receive from BC ferries and the region in general.  Overall, however, the Sidney area is probably one of the safest places to live.  There has been a rise in Break and Enters lately, but the detachment doesn’t have funding for a crime analysis that would provide more concrete information on types of crime in specific areas of this region, and comparisons to other regions across the province and the country.

Guest tonight was Curtis Machek - from Ocean 98.5 and Lenaia Viera and Natasha Cleverley from the University of Victoria

3.  Cosmo and Roger Hind are currently in the process of planning for the Fall Fair.  They stated that they anticipate no significant problems and that the process is progressing in a satisfactory manner.

4.  Many reports that are required to be produced by the club are now on line.

PROGRAM
Guest Natasha Cleverley discussed her involvement with the Farmland Trust.  One of its goals is food security and the Trust liaises with Central Saanich Municipal Government in efforts to achieve that end.  It operates the Newman Farm in Central Saanich where it produces vegetables on a one acre plot.  The produce is then donated to Our Place.

The Guest Speaker was Curtis Machek from Ocean 98.5 FM which broadcasts from Victoria.  He operates the station's Community Cruiser and he has been in the job for one year.  He stated that the station is divided into three parts:

1.  Sales with between 7-8 employees.
2.  On Air and Promotions.  Curtis is a part of this section.
3.  Creative with writers and and two producers.

He stated that Ocean FM targets a certain demographic:  Professional Females between the ages of 25 - 45 years of age.  Their station is rated first after 10 AM daily.  These ratings are calculated twice yearly.  Their format must be continuously re-invented.  All stations target their own specific demographic within the metropolitan area in order to minimize any direct competition.

Ocean FM obtains its revenue from advertising.  It encourages its advertisers to provide prizes for listener contests.  These contests produce listeners so that advertisers can be confident that their investment can return ten times their initial value.

The station is on line.  Its advantage over internet radio is its local content.  The majority of its format is music.  It carries news only in the morning.  Additional news and sports are provided by centralized agencies.  One music programme is generated by DJs in Toronto.

Don Macnamara is a retired Brigadier General, an authority on national and international security affairs.  National security is the most important service a government can do for its people Let's look up and open your eyes....  What's actually going on?  Look at worldwide issues: wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, terrorism, political and economic restructuring, WMDs, oil, resources, refugees, drugs, environmental/ climate issues and conflicts.  Our Canadian values of security, prosperity, stable world order, freedom, human rights and social justice need to be considered in a national security plan.  Critical thinking is needed for strategies, policy making and strategic intelligence.
Trade is the key issue to create worldwide wealth.  Canada lives in a complex, turbulent world and is vulnerable physically, politically and economically....  Consider Canada's worldwide ranking: area #1, coastline #2, power index #14.  The current Defence Strategy is from 2008: Defend Canada, Defend North America, Peacekeeping, Our military and police forces/ RCMP are overstretched and underfunded.  With the upcoming elections let’s get some answers to What is the national strategic plan for Canada?  Think about...Where you sit depends on where you stand.

  1. Meeting called to order @ 6:30 p.m. by President Gordon
  2. Invocation by Dan Rippin
Guests:
Our speaker, Cam McLennan, Paul Boyer and Dr. Mitra Hashemi.

Announcements:
  1. Incoming President, Cosmo, read out the proposed executive for the 2015/16 year.  Cosmo asked if there were any objections or other nominations, which there were not.  A motion was made to accept the new executive, Roger seconded the motion and the club members voted all in favour.  Congratulations to the new executive!
  2. The installation of the new President and Executive will be held at Glen Meadows on Wednesday, July 8th.   Jack MacAulay, Past District Governor, will be conducting the installation.
  3. Roger introduced Dr. Mitra Hashemi, who attended the meeting on behalf of ORCCA, the beneficiary of our Thrifty Foods fundraiser.  ORCCA is a registered society and the name stands for “Oral Care for Children and Adolescents”.  Roger presented Dr. Hashemi with a cheque for $1,000 and she told us about their organization and how the funds would be used for supplies and/or equipment.   O.R.C.C.A.'s purpose is to provide children and adolescents under 19 years of age from low-income families access to oral care in a not for profit setting. It is based on the beliefs that all children and adolescents have the right to healthy oral care and that effective oral care positively transforms the health and lives of children and adolescents.
Program:
The program this evening was Cam McLennan of the Torque Masters Car Club.  Cam told us that Torque Masters was originally formed in or about 1967.  He had referenced to a race track up at Bamberton.  The club faded out in the 1970’s but was revived again in the 1990’s.  At that time, they started doing car shows again up until 2005 when they were down to about 5 members.  In 2009, Cam, as President, brought the club to start car shows again.  At the same time, they tried to get youth involved in the club.  Part of their strategy was to be involved at the high school level by giving $1,000 scholarships to post secondary training in mechanics.  The club is now up to about 70 members.  There is one formal meeting a month, annual membership is $25.  They also widened the scope of the club; rather than restricting it to 1970’s or 80’s vehicles, the club and car shows are open to even new vehicles.  They now have a major sponsor in Coast Capital Insurance.  Their show last year had about 300 cars participate.  Participants are charged $20 per car and the funds go to prizes and other show costs.  The car show this year in Sidney will be on August 23rd.

February is World Understanding Month from Don Bonner, District 5020 Public Image

Posted by Carolyn Morley on Jan 31, 2014

The month of February is special in the Rotary calendar.

It is designated World Understanding Month. February also includes the anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary held on 23 February 1905, now designated World Understanding and Peace Day. Let us honour our fellow Rotarians and Rotary’s goal of world peace and understanding by planning programs and activities during this month that emphasizes understanding and goodwill as essential for world peace.

As Rotarians we should be humbled by Rotary’s undertaking to affect change on a global level through simple ideas such as Community Service, education and relationship building between people. Rotary’s commitment and its dedication of resources to projects such as Youth Exchange, Vocational Training Teams, Ambassadorial Scholarships and the eradication of Polio are exemplary. These programs are designed to build a foundation for the future. They are long term solutions to building peace and goodwill among individual citizens through out the world

Through Rotary and the Rotary Foundation, we foster personal relationships that cross borders and form a foundations for peace around the world. World Understanding Month is a chance for our district to plan and promote Rotary’s continued goal for peace and understanding among the people of the world.
