PROGRAM:  Emily Pridham, Alzheimer’s Society
Emily was introduced by Donna.  Emily is now the Regional Manager for Vancouver Island, for the Alzheimer’s Society.  They now have two resource offices; one in Victoria and the second in Nanaimo.  The Society’s goals are to educate and support families with Alzheimer’s and provide some monies for research.  One of their programs is a Minds in Motion program which is a weekly program involving fitness and socializing.

One of the difficulties suffered by Alzheimer’s patients is social isolation.  One of the most frequent questions Emily hears is “what is the difference between Alzheimer’s and Dementia?”  Dementia is an umbrella term which includes symptoms of cognizant loss, particularly short term memory loss.  Alzheimer’s is one of the most common causes of symptoms that lead to Dementia.  Alzheimer’s is the root cause of approximately 2/3rds of Dementia cases.  Alzheimer’s symptoms are caused by physical changes to the brain, the result of brain cells becoming dysfunctional and dying.  At this point in time, it is not known what causes Alzheimer’s.  Research is centering on a few factors, physical exercise is thought to be an important factor.  Keeping the brain stimulated is also significant.

Emily was thanked by Jack Gallop.
