Minutes for meeting of June 16, 2016
Greeter: John L
Door Duty: Jack M
Sergeant at Arms: Carolyn

President Cosmo presided and called the meeting to order with a computer assisted rendition of the old version of the National Anthem. This was followed by Dan Rippin's Invocation.

GUESTS: Guests and visitors were upcoming new transfer member John Joynt; and Adventures in Technology returnee Mary Strank from Parkland Secondary School and her mother Darla.

WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS
We received a letter and $50 donation from Anthony and Wendy Kluge in remembrance of Honorary Member Elsie MacAulay.

We were given the choice of the August 15th or 22nd for our Goldmine work group time slot. August 15th was chosen later in the meeting.

The Installation dinner for next year’s Board of Directors will be held on July 7th. Tara suggested the Canoe Cove Café, and is working on confirming this. We have successfully used this locale before and it would be available for our exclusive use from 3:00 pm onwards.

PROGRAM:
Dan then introduced Mary Strank, who was our student choice for the Adventures in Technology organized by the Saskatoon Rotary Club in Saskatchewan.  At a later meeting we will also hear from our student selection on their Adventures in Citizenship in Ottawa.

We did not have a RYLA participant this year.

As Dan stated, it was clear that we had chosen a worthwhile participant for this five Day event for the 28 Rotary selected students from across the Country, including five from BC.  She expressed her enthusiasm and understanding of the numerous laboratories, government facilities and businesses they visited which she described in some detail.  She expressed her appreciation for being selected by our Club for this event, for the passionate people who described their work, and for the many friends she made including her Rotary host family.

Editor’s note: The program seemed to have more of an Agricultural and Biological bias this year, which is of course appropriate considering the location. Clearly, if such a program were run here in Victoria it would have a much different bias with its marine and aerospace segments. Something to consider in the future maybe?

SERGEANT AT ARMS:  Carolyn fined husband Ian for his O’Canada comments and Cosmo for not using the new worded version. Others infractions included the new John, Jack G and Roger.

HAPPY AND SAD DOLLARS:  A Happy dollar was donated by Leta for the calm way our speaker Mary handled her computer malfunction at the beginning of her talk.  A Sad dollar was donated by John, as his job has been eliminated.

50/50 DRAW:  John L won the 50-50 raffle with his winning ticket, and blue marble selection with one in five odds.

NEXT MEETING:  June 23, 2016 – John Joynt presents his multi-faceted career, entitled “Submarines... Elephants... and People tracking. What’s next?”

Greeter and Note taker:  Linda Leng
