The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an exclamation mark on the needs of vulnerable seniors, as many continue to struggle to acquire nutritious food under challenging circumstances. A member of the Rotary Club of Sidney has stepped up with a creative fundraising idea.

Kenny Podmore, member and former president of our club (and Sidney Town Crier), came up with the idea of selling t-shirts and golf shirts to raise money for a new seniors’ meal delivery program being administered by Beacon Community Services, a “provider of diverse health, social and volunteer services responding to the priority needs of families and communities on southern Vancouver Island.”

The apparel carries a message inspired by the province’s COVID-19 response and features a heart, in recognition of our front-line workers. Without mentioning the pandemic, the shirts bear the words “Be Kind Be Calm Be Safe,” the phrase repeated throughout the coronavirus crisis by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

Get yours now! The shirts have sold briskly, with the first two runs selling out in short order. As of this writing, the program has provided funding for approximately 500 meals (with a targetted goal of 1000 meals). Choose from shirts in black or white, sizes S-XXXL. T-shirts are $25 and golf shirts are $35 and both prices include taxes.

Perhaps a perfect Father's Day gift for this unforgettable year, they can be ordered by phone at 250-656-5537 or email bkindbcalmbsafe@gmail.com.
