Minutes  of Aug 18 Sidney Rotary meeting

Don Lefever- visiting member of St Martens club, will be here for few months—welcome
 Beth Dipose speaker for Boys and Girls Club services  of Victoria.
Weekly Annoucements:
Food Rescue  Joint project : should be started in September. Presently negotiating a lease for  a CRD warehouse  hope CRD board will sign off Aug 10 on 10 year lease. Mustard seed will  start picking up perishable foods from area Thrifty foods  who will then distribute from warehouse to food banks,  8 neighborhood houses in CRD  for  distributing food boxes to low income families, secondary school  chef program will also use. Hope the program to be self sustaining  in 2-3 years.
Rotoract Club chair—Joey  has ben appointed chair for district Rotoract club
Light up night events  Victoria area clubs looking into it as a fundraiser and  Rotary awareness  program.
District Training assembly (DLTA)  will  be held at the same time as the district conference –May 5-7/ 2017 in Suquamish Wash. ( @ Clearwater Casino resort) bus will be available for participants on Coho.
Ian Morley is concerned about the  fall fair manpower and requests any help  for the Sept long weekend. John  and Roger were  asked about their commitments and  Don Lefever  offered his assistance.
 
Program:
Speaker Beth Depose was introduced by Cosmo.  She is a youth councilor for the Grls and Boys club services of Greater Victoria.. They work with children  who have come from abusive or difficult home situations or youth who have had peer pressure to chose the wrong life path.  There administrative office is  1195 Esquimalt road  They have numerous programs  including: Anger management,   Youth outreach, Education programs for struggling youth----Roger’s cellphone education enhancement,  Duke of Edinburgh program, antibullying,  BiGay Lesbian support program, Youth prenatal program (YP3)- single moms (age15-21) who have had no support from their families, a history of self or family substance abuse are  offered  housing and guidance to  avoid Fetal alcohol syndrome , drug addiction and develop a  healthy environment  for their newborns. Program is supported  by Herway house and  Ministry of Child and family development. Usually  kids are helped  for about a year.  There are 85 clubs  across the country
They are looking for  help  financially or  offering caring suites for  youth  to stay(YP3 program), looking for donors for Xmas turkeys and  have an annual fund raising event called the Mad Hatters Ball which will be held  in March 2017.  Jack Gallop thanked the speaker and presented her with a Polio donation certificate.
 
Fines:   Jack McAulay ( Sarg) :  we ran out of time so  everyone gave a loonie for  the betterment of the pig.
 
50/50 draw: there  was a  mad rush at the end  to buy tickets  increasing the pot by  $5, Cosmo  won  the draw but  did not win the blue marble.
