Meeting called to order by President Jack G at 7:00 p.m. National Anthem led by Jack G Invocation by Jack G GUESTS New members to be: Robert Hawes and James Parker Guest speaker: Shantael Sleight, Saanich Peninsula Literacy, Literacy Outreach Coordinator WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS BBQ Fundraiser: Thank you to everyone for volunteering for the Hot Dog Extravaganza! We were presented a cheque from Royal Oak club by Robert. Heads Up... Claremont Dry Grad UVic Student Building, Dry Grad 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. July 9 Strawberry Festival GUEST SPEAKER PRESENTATION The goal is to read / be read to by at least 1000 books by 5 years old to get a child ready! Literacy is extremely important in our daily lives, and needs to become a lifelong learning habit. Literacy is intertwined with economic growth, community development and crime prevention. Approximately 40% of adults and 35% of working age people do not have the literacy they need to achieve their goals or to function and thrive in a modern economy. This needs to change.... SPL Goals: 1. Increase awareness 2. Grow and sustain our community partnerships and relationships 3. Support community literacy and services How are they doing this? 1. Literacy website and social media pages in all regions 2. Work with Community Services to research literacy needs 3. Open Air Library Tuesday mornings in July, Beacon Hill Park from 10-12, July 4 to August 22 weather permitting. 4. Free program that encourages reading together. Everyone welcome to come and read! Discussed how our Rotary could do a project together with SPL. Details to follow. 50/50 DRAW: Jack M drew a white marble, better luck next time! HAPPY & SAD DOLLARS: Happy dollars for Jack M birthday, happy dollars all round! Bob prepaid for 10 weeks while he's away travelling.
