The Read Society is a community-based organization formed in 1976 that helps children, youth and adults gain literacy and essential skills, including reading, writing and mathematics. It responds to the emerging needs of our communities and collaborates to make literacy and essential skills accessible to all.

The Society has a small paid admin. staff, about 25 part time teachers and 40 – 50 volunteers.

The Society works with other similar organizations to promote Literacy and Numeracy. Lack of these skills is more than ever seen as a major impediment holding people back from improving their way of life.

Their teachers give remedial instructions to students after school with 1 teacher to 1 - 3 students. They also work with Wilkinson Road inmates and with First Nations. They also now have a “Noisy Kids Reading Club” in 4 schools and are hoping to expand this program.

Jack Gallop thanked the speakers.
